In the summer of 2019, my husband and I were gifted an extraordinary stay on Santorini island. Each night with friends, we watched the evening sun dip behind the rim of the extinct volcano of which Santorini island forms part. The phenomenon produces one of the most romantic and beautiful views on the planet. As I paint watercolor and oil paintings in 2019, and during the quarantine of 2020, exploring the beauty of Santorini, COVID-19 impacts tourism to the island. In the summer of 2020, Santorini, with its blue-domed churches and thousand-foot cliffs, looks the same as when I was there, but is unusually empty.
The town of Oia, was closest to our location. This picturesque coastal village is the island’s most celebrated spot. Crowds of tourists are typically lured by the charm of whitewashed houses with blue doors, the precipitous views over the volcanic caldera, and the sheer vertical drop along the central walkway. The location where we stayed, Erosantorini, is the inspiration for the majority of my Santorini series. I learned that its pristine and playful architecture is the perfect backdrop for the spectacle of nature creating its art. The sun, ocean, and landscape work together to create a constantly shifting masterpiece.
